UNN’s Emeritus Professor Celebrates 75th Birthday
The Princess Alexandra Auditorium and Unity Hall, University of Nigeria, Nsukka came alive as distinguished academia’s and captains of industry were present to grace the 75th birthday celebration of Emeritus Professor Dr. Chigioke Christopher Nwosu.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bartho N. Okolo who was represented at the occasion by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Polycarp Chigbu congratulated the celebrant on his 75th birthday and also thanked the organizers of the symposium in his honour. He noted that academic excellence was worth striving for and therefore urged all academia’s to strive for excellence.
The Chairman of the occasion and President, Nigerian Institute of Animal Science (NSAP), and a former student of the celebrant, Prof. Placid Njoku in his opening remarks said that the occasion was a Special Symposium in honour of Emeritus Prof. Nwosu which was organized by his former students turned distinguished professors and astute administrators. He described the celebrant as “a remarkable personality with immense humility, a very happy disposition, a thoroughbred and a seasoned intellectual”.
The Honorable Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina who was represented by Prof. Olusola O. Oni described the celebrant as an academic icon who had developed improved breeds especially poultry in Nigeria.
Also speaking at the occasion, former People’s Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Prince (Dr.) Vincent Ogbulafor, OFR, KSS said “I am here to celebrate a scientist and academician, who had contributed to knowledge, national development and the growth of many younger minds. He has achieved a lot in 75 years and served UNN for 45 years”. He wished him long life, wisdom and knowledge. He also commended him for still being in research despite being retired.
According to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, University of Agriculture, Abeokuta and President, Nigerian Society of Animal Production (NSAP), Prof. Chryss Onwuka, Prof. Nwosu has been a pillar of the society and his works cut across animal breeding and genetics.
However, the celebrant who was elated said “I feel happy and on top of the world”. He advised everyone to endeavor to work hard and go to school and that they should also have the courage to perform.
Further, the wife of the celebrant, Nobel Lady Nwanyioma Juliana Nwosu who was delighted said they have been married for 47 years hence “I feel wonderful and great and also wish him many more glorious and peaceful days, long life and prosperity”.
Prof. Nwosu has over seventy published works to his credit even as the event witnessed the launching of his autobiography book titled “Memoranda Chijiokana” which was reviewed by Mr. Jeff Unaegbu.
Meanwhile, while launching the book, Prince Ogbulafor who was the Chief Presenter remarked that there was “Dignity in Service”. Hence, he recommended that every child should read the book.
The high point of the event was cutting of a birthday cake by the celebrant, assisted by the Vice-chancellor, Prof. Bartho Okolo, Prince (Dr) Vincent Ogbulafor, Prof. Placid Njoku, Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Simeon Ugwu, the children among other important dignitaries that attended the event.
Earlier, the event started with a church service at the St. Peters Chaplaincy, University of Nigeria, Nsukka where Rev. Fr. Prof. Akwanya lead 6 other officiating priests.
