UNN’s Emeritus Professor Celebrates 75th Birthday

The Princess Alexandra Auditorium and Unity Hall, University of Nigeria, Nsukka came alive as distinguished academia’s and captains of industry were present to grace the 75th birthday celebration of Emeritus Professor Dr. Chigioke Christopher Nwosu.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bartho N. Okolo who was represented at the occasion by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Polycarp Chigbu congratulated the celebrant on his 75th birthday and also thanked the organizers of the symposium in his honour. He noted that academic excellence was worth striving for and therefore urged all academia’s to strive for excellence.

The Chairman of the occasion and President, Nigerian Institute of Animal Science (NSAP), and a former student of the celebrant, Prof. Placid Njoku in his opening remarks said that the occasion was a Special Symposium in honour of Emeritus Prof.  Nwosu which was organized by his former students turned distinguished professors and astute administrators. He described the celebrant as “a remarkable personality with immense humility, a very happy disposition, a thoroughbred and a seasoned intellectual”.

The Honorable Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina who was represented by Prof. Olusola O. Oni described the celebrant as an academic icon who had developed improved breeds especially poultry in Nigeria.

Also speaking at the occasion, former People’s Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Prince (Dr.) Vincent Ogbulafor, OFR, KSS said “I am here to celebrate a scientist and academician, who had contributed to knowledge, national development and the growth of many younger minds. He has achieved a lot in 75 years and served UNN for 45 years”. He wished him long life, wisdom and knowledge. He also commended him for still being in research despite being retired.

According to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, University of Agriculture, Abeokuta and President, Nigerian Society of Animal Production (NSAP), Prof. Chryss Onwuka, Prof. Nwosu has been a pillar of the society and his works cut across animal breeding and genetics.
However, the celebrant who was elated said “I feel happy and on top of the world”. He advised everyone to endeavor to work hard and go to school and that they should also have the courage to perform.

Further, the wife of the celebrant, Nobel Lady Nwanyioma Juliana Nwosu who was delighted said they have been married for 47 years hence “I feel wonderful and great and also wish him many more glorious and peaceful days, long life and prosperity”.
Prof. Nwosu has over seventy published works to his credit even as the event witnessed the launching of his autobiography book titled “Memoranda Chijiokana” which was reviewed by Mr. Jeff Unaegbu.

Meanwhile, while launching the book, Prince Ogbulafor who was the Chief Presenter remarked that there was “Dignity in Service”. Hence, he recommended that every child should read the book.

The high point of the event was cutting of a birthday cake by the celebrant, assisted by the Vice-chancellor, Prof. Bartho Okolo, Prince (Dr) Vincent Ogbulafor, Prof. Placid Njoku, Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Simeon Ugwu, the children among other important dignitaries that attended the event.
Earlier, the event started with a church service at the St. Peters Chaplaincy, University of Nigeria, Nsukka where Rev. Fr. Prof. Akwanya lead 6 other officiating priests.

UNN conducts maiden Post-Graduate Screening Exercise

The University of Nigeria, recently conducted her maiden Postgraduate Studies Screening Test for the 2013/2014 academic session at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka campus. Over 3000 candidates made up of Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), Masters and PhD candidates sat for the screening test which took place recently.

Commenting on the conduct of the examination, Mr. Nwankweagu, Maxwell a Master of Arts (M.A) candidate for Mass Communication exclaimed “the examination was quite smooth, interesting and funny”.

Also, Mr. Edemodu, Austin a M.A candidate for the Department of Mass Communication said that the examination was unexpected. “I thought the test will be based on area of specialization rather than on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) and Aptitude test”. He added that the test should have been anchored on specialization so as to ascertain each student’s ability.

Further, Mr. Edo Udoma an M.F.A candidate for Fine Applied Arts remarked that the examination was fine but was not a true test of knowledge.
Meanwhile, Miss. Enukora, Nkiru a PhD candidate for Psychology Department said “the examination was okay while Miss. Ukaeje Ugochi of the same Department said that although the questions were simple, it was not necessary. She advised that in future, questions should be related to one’s area of study.

Also the Special Assistant to the University Librarian, Dr. Cyprian I. Ugwu who was an invigilator observed that the examination was peaceful and successful. He recommended that the examination questions should be decentralized according to departments and that the questions should carry specific instructions.

However, the Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies, Prof. A. A. Ubachukwu remarked that the maiden edition was “borne out of concern of the university on the inability of some Post graduate students to express themselves. He added that “in order to have a form of standardization of the products of the university, the screening test became inevitable without prejudice to any particular institution”.

Prof. Ubachukwu stated that the screening exercise had come to stay as it was a good determinant used in reducing the number of candidates considered for admission and to ensure that the best candidates were admitted.

While reacting on the examination questions, he explained that the questions were standard questions used for job interviews. “The questions were meant to test the critical mind of candidates and how logical the mind can be”, he said.

1,500 Secondary School Students laud UNN-UNESCO Initiative

As part of the just concluded UNESCO-ICTP-UNN Science Fair and Demonstration, about 1,500 Secondary School Science students who participated in the “Science Technology Workshop and Exposition” which was organized by the University of Nigeria in collaboration with the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) at the Jimbaz Laboratory, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, have lauded UNN and UNESCO for the 2 day workshop on Global water and Micro science Demonstration experiment, which afforded them the opportunity to conduct practical experiments in Physics, Chemistry and Biology, using compact and affordable kits that have guiding instructions.

The demonstration experiments were based on the Global Micro Science Experiments (kit based science experiments) which was developed by UNESCO and the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) in the late 1990s.

According to the UNESCO Facilitator, Mr. Imteyaz Khodabux the workshop was to create awareness on the need for science and how to make it more interesting to students. “Without science, there can be no development”, he said.

He added that this was an “International Year of Water Corporation”, hence, the need to sensitize students on the importance of water and the how to purify water through the use of water-experiment science kits.

Further, Miss Yasemin Dogan, another facilitator who facilitated the “Engineers without borders” said that they were able to teach students on what engineering is all about, what engineers do and how to use basic materials to solve problems. She noted that the idea was for the trainers to teach the students so that they would be able to carry on with the teaching even after the UNESCO team leaves.

She pointed out that the students were now able to make filters and hydro electric generators and commended them for their enthusiasm in learning.
Meanwhile, the participating students commented on their experiences. According to Miss Ugwu Olivia, a SS 2 student from Federal Government Girls College, Lejja, “I really enjoyed the practicals by using cheap materials to purify water”.

Also, Master Valerian Osita a SS 2 Student from Comprehensive Secondary School Ozalla said “I am very happy with this practical because it is necessary for a science student”. He thanked the organizers for putting up such a rewarding workshop while Miss Ejeagha Chinenye a SS 2 student from University Secondary School, Enugu remarked “I enjoyed the practicals”.

According to the Project Coordinator, Prof. Jerry Ugwuanyi, the 1500 secondary school students, from Enugu State were distributed as follows; Nsukka Educational District was allocated 500 students, Obollo Educational District 400 students, University of Nigeria Secondary School, Nsukka, 100 and University Secondary School, Enugu 100.

Others schools were further distributed as College of Immaculate Conception Enugu 50, Mea Mater Elizabeth High School, Enugu 50, Federal Government College, Enugu 50, Federal Government Girls College, Lejja 50, St Cyprian Special Science School 100, St Theresa College 50 and Queen of the Rosary Secondary School, Nsukka 50.

Prof. Ugwuanyi, remarked “this workshop has achieved maximum success”. He continued that “although UNESCO recommended few schools and three educational zones which comprised training 800 secondary school science students and 50 secondary school science teachers, we went beyond the initial plan by providing training for 1500 students and over 85 teachers”.

UNN forges alliance with Vatican University

Barely 24 hours after his ordination, the new Catholic Bishop of Nsukka, Rt. Rev. (Prof.) Godfrey Igwebuike Onah, has interfaced a collaboration between the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and the Pontificia Urbaniana University, Vatican, in the areas of staff and students exchange and development of religion and cultural studies.

Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Prof. Bartho Okolo, a day after his ordination, Bishop Onah said that the collaboration was based on the mutual aspiration shared by the UNN and the Catholic university.

“Relationship of this kind can be expanded when there are common interests, given the motto of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka-“to restore the dignity of man”- and the objective of the Pontificia, Urbaniana University-human promotion and salvation- the first way of deepening the relationship is to concentrate on the values that are common to us”, he said.

Bishop Onah, who was a Professor in the Potificia Urbaniana University, said that although the Vatican regretted that he was leaving the University, they were comforted that he was coming to the environment of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He thanked the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria for his hospitality to him and his guests during the ordination and said that the gesture was a sign of good days ahead with the Institution.

Also speaking, the Rector of the Pontificia Urbaniana University, Vatican, Alberto Trevisol,  urged academics to maintain close ties with their students through lectures and mentorships, stating that a student today may be a colleague tomorrow.

He expressed satisfaction that the Bishop, who was once a student of his University, had developed to become a colleague capable of offering good suggestions and advice.

The Rector, who was particularly interested in the study of Nigerian indigenous language at UNN, indicated his willingness to attend the commissioning of the Institute of African Studies Complex, which is currently under construction at the UNN.

In his response, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Prof. Bartho Okolo, thanked the Bishop and the Principal Officers of the Pontificia Uninversity, for extending a hand of friendship to the UNN. He noted that the University of Nigeria had remained focused to the vision of its founding fathers by empowering youths to restore the dignity of man.

Prof Okolo maintained that although the Bishop was the second to be ordained in the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka, his (Bishop’s) status as a Professor made the appointment historical in the context of university business.

He therefore urged people to continuously pray for the new Bishop to enable him accomplish his apostolic, academic and social mandate in the community.
In the entourage of the Bishop were other principal officers of the Pontificia Urbaniana University, Vatican, including; the Vice-Rector, Pontificia University, Prof. Lorella Congionti, the secretary/Registrar, Fr. Roberto Cherubini , the Bursar, Monsignor  Bellizio Reiligio, and a host of  other Catholic priests.
