Brief Biography
Dr. Herbert Anayo Obu is a medical doctor with specialization in paediatrics and Child
Health. He studied medicine and surgery at the College of Medicine of the University of Nigeria and obtained Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree in 1987. He further trained as a paediatrician at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu and obtained the Fellowship of the West African College of Physicians, Faculty of Paediatrics, in April 2000. Dr. Obu is presently employed as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Paediatrics, College of Medicine, University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus and Honorary
Consultant (Paediatrician) in the Department of Paediatrics, University of Nigeria
Teaching Hospital, (UNTH), Enugu. His responsibilities/activities include the following, inter alia: training and supervision of medical students, house-officers (interns) and postgraduate (resident) doctors (including supervision of postgraduate seminars, projects and dissertations), routine clinical duties in a busy paediatric department in a tertiary (teaching) hospital, consultant co-in-charge of the special care baby (neonatology) unit/ paediatric endocrine/general paediatric unit, active participation in departmental, hospital, national, regional and other seminars, conferences and workshops, especially with regard to paediatrics and child health, chairman, departmental undergraduate academic planning/curriculum committee and membership of various other departmental and faculty committees; research on common childhood disorders.
His work experience spans over a period of more than twenty-five years and he has worked in several places in Nigeria and in The Gambia as well. In his professional/academic career, he has had experience in human resources training/manpower development, health resources management and administration. He participated in the Nigerian Technical Aid Corps (TAC) programme of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a Volunteer during which time he was posted to the Republic of The Gambia where he served as Paediatrician/Head of the Paediatric Department of the Royal Victoria Hospital in Banjul, The Gambia. He was involved in a number of national programs in The Gambia such as drafting of the country’s Standard Treatment Guidelines, Adaptation and Implementation of the country’s Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI) programme, training of health workers on case management of malaria /other childhood diseases, polio eradication campaigns, etc and also served in The Gambia Medicines Board as a member. He has over thirty published works in various local and international peer reviewed journals, several other presentations at local/international conferences/workshops and his research interests are on neonatal medicine, childhood malaria/other infections, and general paediatrics. He has excellent ICT skills, including word processing, power point, excel and internet.
Dr. Obu is a member of the Order of Knights of Saint Mulumba, Nigeria.
He is married to Mrs. Louisa Ngozi Obu, a Principal Executive Officer at the ESUT Teaching Hospital, Parklane, Enugu and the marriage is blessed with six children, two girls and four boys.
